Buy Local – CBS New York

Montclair, NJ (CBSNewYork) — As the holidays are approaching, you may be thinking of getting a gift.

On Monday, CBS2’s Jenna De Angelis told New Jersey business owners that local shopping is more important than ever during the holiday season.

Downtown Montclair has pictures of small business owners, alongside holiday decorations. When shopping at stores like East Side Mags, they remind you who you support.

“The money you spend with us is used to pay my employees and help them buy holiday gifts for their families. To feed their families and help them pay their mortgages. It depends on me, “said Jeff Beck, owner of the East Side Mug.

In return, Beck promises a personal experience to those who visit his cartoon bookstore, or who prefer personal shopping in the distance.

“They call us or send us messages on social media,” Hey, my son is crazy about Spider-Man, you know, I really got them something cool I want to put it in. Do you have any suggestions? “Beck said.

He asks you to think outside the big box store this holiday season.

“You can find something on the Amazon or Wal-Mart website and take a screenshot to see if it’s in a local store or you can order it,” says Beck. “You can’t go back directly to your community as much as shopping locally.”

Lisa Johnson, the owner of Culture Couture, understands that people may be worried about congestion, so make reservations before and after business hours.

“I think everyone should reach out to their favorite business and ask if they are willing to offer it,” Johnson said.

In Montclair, retailers remain open late Thursday, and small businesses Saturday will begin two hours of free parking throughout the holiday season.

These are just a few of the efforts that the Montclair Center’s Business Improvement District wants to help moms and pop in the coming weeks.

“During the holiday season, there are retailers who do 40% of their business year-round,” said Jason Gleason of Exec. Director of Montclair Center BID.

“There is a risk that it sounds like a social media meme [that] Float at this time of the year: Think small. Think about it, make a small purchase, “Beck said.

Small businesses need it most, especially at once and in a year.

Small business owners also say it’s a great way to disseminate information by leaving positive reviews online and sharing social media posts.
