Dear gridlock thumb,

RE: I think you need a license for an electric bike that kills you in a car accident and exceeds 20 mph or 25 mph. I see them passing through the light without following the traffic law. I write a letter to a member of the state legislature.

Diane

Dear Diane,

If it was up to me, I would only allow electric bikes with a top speed of 18 mph (rather than the current 25 mph) without unpedaling. Vehicles equipped with an engine and capable of running faster without pedaling are subject to registration (I suggest a small amount, for example $ 10) and must comply with all traffic rules and regulations. The problem is at the state level. There is no legal way to register these vehicles. So I’m glad you wrote to the Legislature. Looking at the road fatalities statistics comparing 2021 and 2019, we did not see an increase in the number of fatalities on electric bikes, despite the much higher number of fatalities on the road. , Motorcycle / moped deaths have more than doubled. There is no doubt that this is due to the fact that some riders are illegal and do not use helmets.
