Bronx Murders: Man pronounced gunshot dead 15 months after shooting

Bronx, NY (WABC) — Police said Thursday that a man shot in March 2022 died of his injuries.

Jose Bencosme, 23, was pronounced dead on June 9, 2023.

Authorities said his death was from a gunshot wound that occurred more than a year ago.

At approximately 6:50 pm on March 7, 2022, police responded to a 911 call from a man who had been injured in the shooting.

The incident occurred in front of 214 East 165th Street.

Arriving police found Benkosme with gunshot wounds to the neck and torso.

EMS rushed to the scene and transported the victim to a New York City health facility. & Hospital/Lincoln.

Kelvin Mejia, 22, was arrested around 7:50 am on June 3, 2022

He is charged with attempted manslaughter, assault, criminal use of a firearm, and criminal possession of a firearm.

The incident is now considered a homicide.

The investigation is still ongoing.
