Immediately after the Christmas carol event, gunmen began shooting at St. John’s The Divine Cathedral in Morningside Heights on Sunday afternoon, but it seems that bystanders have not been injured.
Around 3:45 pm on December 13, police officers set fire and seriously injured a man during a shooting outside the place of worship on the corner of West 112th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
Emergency personnel took an unidentified man to Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital. Some retailers have reported that he has died, but police have not yet confirmed his condition. The NYPD has also not yet established why he started firing.
Witnesses testified that the suspect held a pistol over his head and fired into the air about 16 times, shouting “shoot.”
When policemen came in, hundreds of bystanders gathered to see Carol on the holidays fled in all directions. The streets between West 111th and West 113th Streets were blocked from pedestrians and traffic while SWAT trucks, police cars and ambulances remained on the scene as NYPD. Authorities will investigate.
Two police officers were treated for tinnitus, but no one else was injured in the shooting.
According to city councilman Mark Levine, the shooters scaled the cathedral’s scaffolding and began firing “indiscriminately in the air” from there. An unidentified person seems to have requested a police officer to shoot him.
“He was screaming to be killed,” Levine said. Tweet.. “Police arrived soon. The suspect was shot. His condition is unknown, but he seems dead. Others have not been injured.”
The shooter caused fear and vigilance in the cathedral, and concert attendees raised their hands and were separated from the church.
A concert featuring masked, socially distant members of the Cathedral Choir took place on the steps of the cathedral at 3 pm and ended by the time the shot rang.
The cathedral is home to the Diocese of New York.
