AOC proposes funding to deprogram white supremacists

Congressman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez said on Friday night that the federal government needed to fund the deprogramming of white supremacists and conspiracy theorists.

“The white supremacist cause is useless and a nihilist,” AOC, a Democrat who represents parts of the Bronx and Queens, said at a virtual town hall meeting on Friday night.

“Their world never exists,” she said, triggered by a fierce siege to the US Capitol by President Trump’s radical supporters.

“We have to pick up those pieces.”

Ocasio Cortez said her civil rights House subcommittee has held a hearing on white supremacy over the past two years and has a program to “deradicalize” brainwashed supporters. ..

But she said funding was not a priority in these programs during the Trump era.

“There are people who are radically evolving now. It will take a very long time and a lot of effort to deradical these people,” she said.

“This is an unresolved issue on January 20,” said Congressman, referring to when Trump left the White House and was taken over by President-elect Joe Biden.

She said that many fringe radicals function in “false information bubbles” and require multiple conversations to unprogram them and compare them to treatment.

But she said the study showed that it was “curable.”

“The funding for these programs needs to be doubled, tripled, and quadrupled,” said Ocasio-Cortez.

The AOC said there are various radicalizations, from sympathizers to conspiracy theorists to neo-Nazis. Such radical ideologies can lead to violence and domestic terrorism.

She said the conspiracy theory that the election had been stolen from him was mistakenly pushed by Trump, radicalizing his supporters who invaded the Capitol last week, resulting in violence and the deaths of five people. The AOC said he felt his life was threatened.
