A jet that builds around Trevor Lawrence is just as important as drafting him.

Jets lost to the Los Angeles Chargers 34-28 and fell to 0-10 on Sunday. Here are some thoughts and observations from the game:

1.1. The Jets have been out of the playoffs for months, but became official on Sunday when Colts defeated the Packers in overtime. The result, coupled with Jets’ defeat, meant that Jets would miss the playoffs for the tenth consecutive year. This is the second longest playoff drought in franchise history, lasting a season from 1970 to 1980.

It’s unbelievable to think that it’s been 10 years since Jets entered the playoffs. Worse than that, five years have passed since the playoffs were contested. Jets have sniffed the playoffs since the 2015 season when they were 10-6 and lost to Buffalo in the 17th week.

I didn’t go to see the team in the 1970s, but for a long time I’ve heard stories of the lost decade in New York football, not only for Jets but also for the Giants. I wondered how that futile practice would be compared to this.

The Jets win rate has been .370 since 2011 (57-97). This is slightly better than the 0.356 win rate (57-103) of 1970-80. But look at those records. If Jets loses the last six games and finishes 0-16, it will be 57-103 in the last decade, exactly the same record as the 70’s team.

During this horrific run, the Jets division has been dominated by the Patriots. In the 70’s, it was dolphins and Colts in the first half of 10 years. Jets finished second only once in the 1970s in 1972. In the last 10 years, 2011, 13 and 15 years, we have been ranked second.

As such, Jets today is comparable to Jets in the 70’s, the worst time in team history. If Jets finishes 0-16, the worst team in franchise history will set aside the 1996 Jets, who finished 1-15. This is not the history that any team wants to make.

Another note about drought. The only teams with longer droughts than Jets are the Browns (17) and the Buccaneers (12). However, both of these teams are currently in the playoffs. This means Jets could have the longest active streak in the NFL by the end of the season.

2.2. The Chargers rookie quarterback Justin Herbert was very impressive on Sunday. He seems to know where to take the ball, and his physical skills are clear. Looking at Herbert, Jets fans can dream of Trevor Lawrence’s potential next season and how they can change Jets.

But this is what stands out to me. Herbert has Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Hunter Henry. Who would come here for Lawrence if Jets drafted him in first place overall? Joe Douglas, General Manager of Jets, has a big challenge. If the first line of the plan is to land Lawrence, the second line must be to build around him. The Jets failed to build around Mark Sanchez 10 years ago and did it again with Sam Darnold. That doesn’t mean that two of them were all-professionals, but because of the talent around them, we couldn’t see the best from them.

Denzel Mimes looks like he could be a good player. Jets needs to add another top receiver to the free agent this year to help Lawrence and quarterbacks.

3.3. Jets roster sales this offseason can be staggering. How many of these players are part of the future? As expected, when he has a new coach, he has a big say in the staff and definitely wants a different player than Adam Gace wanted.

One of the things that has stood out in my time around the jet over the last decade is the lack of continuity. I don’t know if the loss is the product of it, or vice versa, and the lack of continuity is the result of the loss. The focus is on continuity with the front office, coaching staff and quarterbacks. However, the entire Jets roster seems to be flipped every 1-2 years. The last time Jets stabilized the roster was in 2008-12, when the team put together a core of the players.

Looking at the Jets starters on Sunday, here’s a breakdown of the years they arrived at Jets:

Offense

2020 (8): Breshad Perryman, Meky Becton, Connor McGavern, Greg Van Roten, George Fant, Denzel Mimes, Joe Flacco, Frank Gore

2019 (3): Alex Lewis, Ryan Griffin, Jamison Clouder

No offensive player was here before 2019. Chris Hardan didn’t start, but he played a lot and has been here since 2018. If Samdernold is healthy, he started and has been here since 2018.

defense

2020: Lamar Jackson, Bryce Hall, Ashtin Davis

2019: John Franklin Myers, Quinnen Williams

2018: Folorunso Fatukasi, Harvey Langi, Neville Hewitt, Frankie Luvu

2017: Marcus May

2016: Jordan Jenkins

There are a few more defensive players here for a while, but Jenkins and May are the only players who have been here for a really long time.

Looking at that list of starters, I think there are four players in the attack that is expected to come back next season, and probably six players in the defense. This means sales on many rosters next year as well.

4.4. Some of the playcall stories that came out of the game on Sunday. I don’t think it’s a big deal for Adam Gase to receive a play call from Dowell Loggains and call it into a quarterback. This wasn’t a problem because there was a problem with the game. There was no delay in the game penalty that caused it. It was just a problem as the broadcaster made it during the game.

The other is to monitor the Chiefs. After Andy Reid chooses a play and tells Eric Vinniemy, Vinniemy calls it to Patrick Mahomes. It seems to work for them.

It is not uncommon for coaches to split play calls depending on the situation. One coach may call all red zone play or third down play. Gase said he was involved in a two-minute call and a third down.

Jet planes are 0-10, so everything is ripe for criticism. If they were 10-0, no one would blink this story.

Reveal statistics

Jets passed 196 yards on Sunday. It’s the 15th consecutive game they had without a 300-yard pass game. According to the Pro-Football-Reference, this is the longest active streak in the NFL. The Giants are second at 11.

Amazing snap count

Chris Hardan played 36 out of 60 snaps (60 percent).Herndon had some good moments on Sunday but is still surprised to play more than Ryan Griffin (27 snaps)

Game ball

Defensive lineman Henry Anderson played the best match in two years. He blocked the punt, recorded a ½ sack, and had five tackles.
