New York (CBSNewYork) — Earlier this week, a 70-year-old woman speaks for the first time after being shot in the face while riding an MTA bus in Brooklyn.

Surrounded by members of the community, Gloria Flores became emotional on Saturday, thanking God for saving her life after being shot on Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, dozens of passengers were on the B-25 bus, driving Fulton Street near Tompkins Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, and someone fired outside.

Surveillance video shows an innocent bystander running to hide in a nearby restaurant.

According to police, Flores was sitting behind the bus when his cheek was grabbed by a bullet.

At a press conference on Saturday, Flores told reporters in Spanish, “I was bleeding so much that I was praying to God to empower me.”

Flores’ family says that when she was shot, two mothers and five grandmothers were doing errands.

She was taken to the hospital where she was sutured, but otherwise she is recovering well.

During that time, shootings in the city have almost doubled. By this time last year, there had been 706 shootings in the city. As of Friday, there were 1,373 shootings this year.

New York Attorney General Letitia James says she needs to stop violence and has a message to those who have committed crimes.

“You need to contact one of us to let us know that we can help you … I want to give you a job, I want to give you an apartment, I want you In exchange for a gun that you want to provide you with a safe environment, “James said.

As for Flores, she’s happy to be alive.

“Thanks to the bus driver, NYPD, EMS and all the doctors in the hospital,” she said in Spanish.

No one else on the bus was reported injured.

Anyone who has the information will be asked to call the police.
