8000-year-old skull found on the Minnesota River – New York Daily News

The skull of a young man who lived 8000 years ago was found in the Minnesota River.

Local officials announced a shocking date earlier this week after two kayaks found bones during a drought last summer.

The kayak handed over the skull to the police because he thought it could lead to a missing person case and an unsolved crime. Local police handed it over to the FBI.

The federal government used radiocarbon dating and quickly realized that the skull had not been linked to crime in the last 7,000 years. Anthropologists at the bureau noticed a dent in the skull, which “probably suggests a cause of death.”

“It was a complete shock to us that the bones were so old,” said Scott Hubble, Sheriff of Renville County. MPR News..

Hable’s office posted the news on Facebook, but deleted it because the local Native American community said it was offensive.

“We didn’t mean it was unpleasant,” Hable told MPR.

According to archaeologists, the Minnesota region is likely to have been sparsely populated about 8,000 years ago.
